Lamar Elementary was placed on SECURE protocol late this morning due to increased police activity in the neighborhood — but officials stress there is no direct threat to the school.
San Angelo ISD says the move was made as a precaution after police staged emergency resources near the 5900 block of Southwest Boulevard, close to Shady Hill Drive and Canyon Rim Drive.
Police confirm they are dealing with an ongoing family-violence situation involving a 43-year-old man and a firearm. Both the San Angelo Police Department SWAT team and the Tom Green County SRT were deployed to the area.
Police Chief Travis Griffith says the school district is not involved in the situation — and officers used the nearby parking lot because it was the closest available staging area. He added that some threats were made, prompting the SWAT response, but there is currently no threat to the surrounding neighborhood.
Residents in the immediate area are being asked to stay inside for now while the situation is resolved.
School officials say families can review safety procedures anytime at saisd dot org slash safety.
