If you’re seeing barn swallows return this spring, wildlife experts say that’s right on schedule. Barn swallows migrate back to Texas each year and often reuse the same mud nests found on homes and bridges. Federal law protects them under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, meaning nests and birds can’t be disturbed while they’re occupied. The birds are known for helping control insects like flies and mosquitoes. Experts say once the birds leave later in the year, nests can be removed if necessary. Until then, patience is key as these seasonal visitors settle in.
