A Texas man, Robert “Bobby” Leon Smith III, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for running a $61.5 million Medicare fraud scheme. Prosecutors say Smith used fake or purchased doctor’s orders to send unnecessary medical products to patients across several states and overseas. He pleaded guilty in 2025 but fled before sentencing and was later captured by U.S. Marshals. In addition to prison time, he’s been ordered to pay more than $30 million in restitution.
