SNAP benefits, the nation’s largest food assistance program, are being stolen through a method called “SNAP skimming,” where criminals access benefits by exploiting outdated, unprotected cards. While some states have started using chip-enabled cards, Texas is still behind, and the lack of security makes it easy for fraudsters, including sophisticated international criminal groups, to steal these vital resources. Experts argue that updating to chip cards or adopting contactless payment methods like Apple Pay could help protect vulnerable families from losing their benefits. Without these improvements, thefts are expected to continue growing.
