Another Pitcher From Wall Signs With Midland College

Wall senior pitcher Caleb Heuertz signed a letter of intent to pitch after high school for Midland College. Heuertz is the second Wall pitcher in the past month to sign with Midland College along with Luke Young. Heuertz was the 3A baseball player of the year according to the Texas Sports Writers Association. Last season, Heuertz went 13-0 on the mound for Wall with a 1.26 ERA and also batted .462 and helped Wall win their first-ever state championship in baseball. Heuertz also hit seven homers and drove in 68 runs.

ASU VB Player Named All-American

Angelo State volleyball had one of their best seasons in program history and the Belles had another player receive All-American honors. Redshirt-Sophomore Kailyn Gilbreath made the third-team in the 38th annual American Volleyball Coaches Association All-American team. Gilbreath was named the Lone Star Conference offensive player of the year and was third in the LSC in kills per set. Since 2012, ASU volleyball has 11 different players receive All-American honors by the AVCA. The Belles finished the 2019 season with a 29-3 record.

Wayland Baptist Player Scores 100 Points

JJ Culver of Wayland Baptist University scored 100 points in a game in a 124-60 win over Southwestern Adventist in Plainview, Texas. JJ Culver, a 6-foot-5 senior, is the older brother of former Texas Tech star and now Minnesota Timberwolves rookie Jarrett Culver. JJ Culver was 34-for-62 from the field, including 12-for-33 from 3-point range, and 20-for-27 from the free throw line. The rest of Culver's teammates combined to go 8-for-15 from the field. Clarence Francis of Rio Grande (Ohio) is the only other player in NAIA history to have a 100-point game, scoring 113 in 1954. Only one player in Division I history has had a 100-point game: Furman's Frank Selvy scored 100 in 1954. The last college player to score at least 100 was Jack Taylor of Division III's Grinnell College when Taylor scored a collegiate record 138 points in 2012, then 109 points in 2013. Wilt Chamberlain is the only NBA player to score 100 points in a game.

Lake View and Central Fall in Hoops; Jim Ned Defeats Wall

In HS basketball last night, the Lake View Chiefs lost at home to Brownwood 70-54. Jesse Greer had 21 points for Lake View in the loss. The Chiefs fall to 2-8. The Lake View Maidens came up short at home to Early, 40-35. Alayshia Capuchina led the Maidens with 16 points. The Maidens are now 9-5. The Central Bobcats lost on the road at Abilene Wylie 67-38. The Bobcats drop to 2-9 this season. The Central Lady Cats made a comeback late but it wasn’t enough in a 28-22 loss at Abilene Wylie. Wylie and Central combined to only score 14 second half points. The Lady Cats are 3-7 on the year.

Also in girls basketball, #3 Jim Ned defeated #9 Wall in Tuscola 50-34. The Lady Hawks fall to 7-4 this season. The Veribest Lady Falcons won big over Garden City 58-15, and the Miles Lady Bulldogs rolled over TLCA 53-24. The Christoval Lady Cougars pulled out a 43-37 win over Water Valley.……In boys basketball, Jim Ned knocked off Wall 47-44. TLCA boys won at Miles 56-42. Christoval won big at Water Valley 69-23.

ASU Belles Basketball Sweeps LSC Weekly Awards

Angelo State Belles basketball swept the Lone Star Conference weekly awards. ASU post Dee Moore is the LSC Offensive Player of the Week and Sawyer Lloyd was named the Defensive Player of the Week. Moore scored 16 points against Tarleton then had 19 points against Texas Woman's and averaged 17.5 ppg. Sawyer Lloyd, the freshman from Wall, registered five steals against Tarleton and two steals and two blocks against Texas Woman's. The Belles are 5-2 this season and off this week. Next up is a road trip next week to Midwestern State and Cameron.
