City Council Meeting Preview

San Angelo City Council members face a large consent agenda and a short regular agenda today as they meet, beginning at 8:30 this morning. Among the items to be decided will be to approve a resolution supporting the Texas Municipal League's campaign against the state's effort to erod the ability to allow cities to make local decisions on finding solutions to problems.  The council will also discuss ordinances dealing with stormwater quality and illicit discharge. The meeting will be held at the McNease Convention Center.

Christoval Home Fire

Christoval volunteer firefighters battled a house fire in Christoval late yesterday evening which heavily damaged the home. When firefighters arrived to the home, flames were already coming from the roof area. Reports say the occupants got out safely as firefighters arrived. The fire was reported around 9 pm and Christoval volunteers were reportedly aided by the Pecan Creek department. It took several hours battling the blaze because of home construction and metal roof. 

Goodfellow to Conduct Active Shooter Exercise

Goodfellow Air Force Base is conducting an Active Shooter Exercise on base on Thursday  (Dec.13). Individuals in the area may hear their loudspeaker used to announce weather and safety conditions to the base, and should not be alarmed. Delays at both gates can be expected during the exercise. ASU Fall Commencement Activities Announced

Nearly 7 hundred students are scheduled to graduate during Angelo State University’s fall commencement ceremonies on Saturday in the Junell Center/Stephens Arena. Graduates will walk the stage at one of 2 ceremonies that day, one at 10 am and one at 2 pm. All of ASU’s commencement activities are open free to the public, and the two ceremonies may also be viewed live on the ASU website. The speaker will be ASU alum and San Angelo native Dr. Jack Nowlin, dean of the Texas Tech University School of Law.  In conjunction with commencement, the ASU Nursing Department will conduct the annual Fall Pinning Ceremony for its graduates on Friday in the Houston Harte University Center. 
Holiday Trash Schedule and Office Closures

City offices will be closed December 24th and 25th and January 1st for the Christmas and New Year’s holidays. There will be no trash pickup on Christmas Day, though trash will be collected on New Year’s Day. Collection will be delayed one day from Dec. 25 through Dec. 28. So, Tuesday’s routes will be serviced on Wednesday. Wednesday’s routes will be serviced on Thursday, and so on into Saturday. Routes for commercial customers may also lag by a day during that span. 

Among the City operations that will be closed will be the senior and rec centers, the Parks and Recreation offices, the City-County Health Department, the Animal Shelter, Fairmount Cemetery’s business offices, Municipal Court and the Nature Center

 

Ongoing Christmas Activities

Events for this year's Concho Christmas Celebration are continuing. On Saturday it was the annual "Tuba Christmas" event at the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts. About 20 tuba and Euphonium Players performed traditional Christmas and holiday songs. The players came from all over the concho valley, with one coming from Midland to participate. Coming up will be the Run Rudolph Run hosted by the San Angelo Road Lizards and Shannon.  Will be on Sunday at 5:30 pm. It's a free, non-competitive run and walk 2 point 5 miles through the Tour of Lights. Strollers and wheelchairs are welcome. Also, the first ever Kayak Through the Lights event will be Saturday beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the boat ramp located behind the Girl Scouts Building. Christmas Posada Coming

The 17th Annual Christmas Posada will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. next Friday, (Dec. 14th), at the McNease Convention Center, 501 Rio Concho Drive. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. There will be a feast of tamales, and more. There will also be live entertainment and gifts for children delivered by Santa. Sponsored by Conexion San Angelo, the event is free for the community, and everyone is welcome.

Police Arrest Man for Drug Possession

On Friday members of the Police Street Crimes Division executed a Search and Arrest Warrant at a home in the unit block of West 31st Street. The warrant named 37-year-old James Howell to be in possession of a quantity of Methamphetamine at the residence. As a result of the search, Investigators located and seized a quantity of suspected Methamphetamine and narcotics distribution paraphernalia. Howell was arrested and booked into the Tom Green County Jail for State Jail Felony Possession of Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1 and two County Warrants.

Mans Arrest Clears Up Several Crimes

City Police say the arrest of a 27-year-old man on Friday cleared up several recent property crimes. Police located wanted Joseph Michael Garcia, operating a stolen Ford Edge near Chadbourne and West Avenue L.  Officers attempted to detain Garcia, however, he fled on foot and was later taken into custody without further incident. Detectives have linked Garcia to several ongoing investigations involving stolen vehicles, vehicle burglaries, and thefts throughout San Angelo. Several incidents captured on surveillance videos have been circulating on social media. He was booked into jail on several charges. 

New Head of Boys and Girls Club

The Boys & Girls Club officials have named Harry Thomas as Interim CEO of the Boys & Girls Club of San Angelo. He has been a board member of the Club for more than 23 years. Previous CEO, Ed Lopez has resigned due to health reasons after 18 years serving in that position. The search committee will begin an immediate nationwide search for a permanent CEO. The Boys & Girls Club has been a part of the San Angelo Community since 1965. They provide after school mentoring programs in education, leadership, physical activities, arts, technology, and abstinence from at-risk activities.

Fort Concho Christmas

A cold rainy start to the weekend put a damper on the number of visitors at Historic Fort Concho for the annual Christmas at Old Fort Concho event. Despite the cold rainy weather on Friday and Saturday, the three-day event had lots of holiday fun and activities for families. There was live music and skits, Indian dancing, Santa Claus workshop, teepees and lots of unique holiday gifts. The weekend celebration is the Concho Valley's largest holiday event. 

Sherriff's Felony Arrest

Tom Green County Sheriff deputies arrested one suspect on drug charges on Wednesday. On a field investigation, they arrested Marcus Wiley McVae and seized crack cocaine, marijuana, edible marijuana products, and cash along with evidence of the distribution of narcotics. He was arrested on multiple charges and bond is pending, according to officials. 

Friends and a Flick Movie Night

Shannon Women and the San Angelo Performing Arts Center present "Friends and a Flick," a monthly free movie night at the SAPAC Brooks & Bates Theatre, 82 Gillis St. This month’s “Friends and a Flick” is scheduled for Thursday, December 27th at 7 pm featuring the film "The Holiday."  it is a free event open to ages 18 and up. Local Wreaths Across America Effort

Members of Civil Air Patrol’s San Angelo Composite and Texas Leadership Charter Academy Cadet Squadrons are partnering once more with Wreaths Across America, to place wreaths on the graves of fallen military on Saturday, December 15th. They will be laying 300 wreaths at the Belvedere Memorial Park, All Vet Cemetery starting at 11 am. The public is invited to join them in laying a wreath at a grave to say Thank You for their life and service to our nation.  

Free Pet Adoption Event

Concho Valley PAWS is hosting a free adoption event on Saturday, December 15th at the San Angelo Animal Shelter on US Highway 67 North. The Homes for the Holidays event will run from 10 to 6 pm. Those wishing to adopt are asked to complete the adoption application online at cvpaws.org this week. PAWS will also provide spay and neuter vouchers for 25 dollars for the first 75 people. Santa will also be here posing for pet portraits. 

ASU Choral Christmas Concert

The Angelo State University Chorale and San Angelo Community Chorale presented their Christmas concert last evening at First United Methodist Church.  They performed highlights from Handel’s “Messiah.” and several other works. The chorales were accompanied by the Permian Basin String Quartet and the San Angelo Central High School Women’s Choir.
Elks Home Away from Home Event

The San Angelo Elks Club Lodge is once again sponsoring this year's Home Away from Home Event for military members at Goodfellow who can’t be home with their families on Christmas Day. The Elks are asking for donations of gift cards or other new items that can be used as appropriate gender, or neutral gifts for the service members attending the event. The event will be Christmas Day from 12 to 5 pm at the Elks Lodge at 2121 South Chadbourne. A traditional Christmas meal will be served, along with gifts and games. For donations call 325-227-6920.

Christmas Light Tour Opens

This year celebrates 25 years of delighting visitors with the Christmas Tour of Lights along the Concho River downtown. The 2018 Concho Christmas Celebration River Light Tour soft opened Friday evening with the tour running every night through Monday, December 31st. It features three million lights and more than seventy-five Christmas Greeting Cards. The Tour is open from 6 to 10 p.m. on weeknights, and from 6 to midnight on Friday and Saturday. A suggested donation of 5 dollars per vehicle is appreciated, and families are invited to walk, run, bike, or drive the tour.

ASU Fall Commencement Speaker Announced

San Angelo native and Angelo State University alumnus Dr. Jack Nowlin, dean of the Texas Tech University School of Law, will deliver the commencement addresses during ASU’s fall graduation ceremonies on December 15th, in the Junell Center/Stephens Arena. More than 6 hundred 50 ASU graduates are scheduled to walk the stage during the two graduation exercises. A 1991 ASU graduate, Nowlin has been dean of the TTU School of Law since July 2017.
Holiday Planetarium Shows

The Angelo State University Planetarium will present two full-dome public astronomy shows during its 2018 holiday schedule, beginning Thursday, November 29th, in the Vincent Building, 
Each Thursday “Season of Light” will run at 7 p.m. and “Secret Lives of Stars” will run at 8 p.m. All the shows are open to the public with admission prices of 3 dollars for adults and 2 for children, active military and senior citizens.  ASU students, faculty and staff are admitted free.
Downtown Christmas Season Events

The Concho Christmas Celebration organized several holiday events this season, in addition to the tour of lights event. Saturday afternoon there was the Community Tree Lighting celebration featuring the Twin Mountain Tonesmen and the San Angelo Community Band. Following the Tree Lighting Ceremony most stayed downtown and enjoyed the annual Lights of Christmas Parade. Also coming up this month is “Run Rudolph Run,” a non-competitive fun run; “Tuba Christmas” at the SanAngelo Museum of Fine Arts; and, new to the Celebration event lineup is the  “Kayak Through the Lights,” an evening paddle along the Concho River.
